Bread baskets in Germany are something I will never forget, especially the chewy salt sticks called salzstangerl. It's a bread for eating with something like Leberkäse, a speciality of pork goodness, or just to nosh on in a beer situation.
Stangerl, like pretzels, don't have a long shelf life. Consider them "for the moment." And for great moments, as the salt or seeds that cover them entice you to drink more, well, they are easy to make disappear. I made some with a hybrid dough, and it brought back some memories of some bierstube and gasthuas I visited so long ago!
